The Endless Night
Some carnivals close at midnight. This one never figured out how.
Here’s why.

The Last Dance
The Cyber Cirque came to the edge of the sea one autumn, half wonder and half machine. A showman in red velvet called the acts. A quiet man they called the Keeper of the Flame lit the torches. And a dancer with fire in her hands made three towns forget to breathe.
After her final turn she always bowed to the man in the shadows first. He gave her an amulet as a promise. He loved her the way you hold a candle in the wind: so tightly the flame starts to gasp.
The Gate at Two
One night the clock struck two and she didn’t come back for the encore. The Keeper put out the torches, the way he always did. The Ringmaster stood in the empty ring until morning.
Nobody knows where she went. The willows know.

The Wish in the Willows
Past the edge of the grounds, where the branches hang like curtains, a witch grants wishes. The Ringmaster begged for her last night, forever. The Witch was quiet a long time. She asked if there was anything else he wanted. He said no.
“Then you’ll have exactly that,” she said. He was too happy to notice her scarred hands, or the thin chain at her throat. Every wish casts a shadow.

Just One More Song
The wish worked. At eight the lanterns lit. At two the night folded back on itself and began again, and it has run that same night ever since, inside a dream the Ringmaster can’t wake from.
Lucky Liz hands every guest a token at the gate. Barnaby rolls his ball after anyone drifting toward the exit. Some guests have been dancing for one night. Some can’t quite remember. Two hours become two weeks. He doesn’t mean to keep anyone. He just can’t let the night end.

Beyond the Lantern Light
A night that never ends shines very brightly from the outside. Out in the dark, something ancient noticed. Abandoned long ago, its loneliness hardened into hunger, and nothing feeds it like stolen time.
As long as the music plays, it can’t get in. But every loop wears the spell thinner. The only thing between it and the gate is a man with a lantern who has never once let the torches go out.
The Way Out
Lucky Liz will only whisper it if you’ve been kind: there is a Loophole. The Witch built it into the spell on the first night, because every bargain has one. It isn’t a key. It’s a dance.
The night can’t end while light and shadow are at war, and while the dreamer is too lost to see either of them. So when the Fire Ballet begins, watch closely. It’s his dream, danced in front of you. You’ll see what he lost, and what it became. And if the night goes the way Liz hopes, you’ll see the only thing strong enough to break a wish.

When the fire dances, don’t look away.
Nobody has found out how the night ends. Maybe this is the night. The loop opens Saturday, October 24 at The Sanctuary, Venice.
